If something feels off…

Finger counting is a stage, not a setback

“My child still counts on their fingers.” If that’s the sentence in your head, here’s what’s usually going on.

What’s usually going on

Fingers are how young children make numbers real — every child starts there. They stop being needed when small facts are known by heart: pairs that make ten, doubles, adding within 5 and then 10. If every sum still starts from 1 on a finger, one of those fact steps hasn’t settled yet. Build the facts and the fingers retire on their own.

Usually a chain, not one thing

Each link below is a real skill from the map, in the order they usually stack. The “builds on” lines aren’t our opinion — they’re the map’s own connections, with its reasons.

  1. Addition as combining or putting together two ages 4–6

    Your child knows that adding means joining two groups to find the total. 4 cars and 3 more cars make 7 altogether.

  2. Fluent adding and subtracting within 5 ages 5–6

    Your child can answer sums within 5, like 2 + 3 or 5 − 2, straight away. They do not need to count on their fingers.

    Builds on “Addition as combining or putting together two”: Fluency with addition within 5 requires understanding addition as combining.

  3. Number bonds ages 5–6

    Your child can quickly recall facts like 8 + 5 = 13, and knows 13 − 5 = 8 without working it out again.

  4. Fluent adding and subtracting within 10 ages 6–7

    Your child can answer sums within 10, like 7 + 3 or 9 − 4, almost instantly. They do not stop to count on their fingers.

  5. Fluent adding and subtracting within 20 ages 7–8

    Your child can recall every single-digit sum, like 7 + 8 = 15, within a second. Subtraction facts like 15 − 8 come just as fast.

Fingers at 5 and 6 are exactly right — that’s how number sense gets built. Around 7 and 8, facts within 10 usually start to come without counting. Later than that just means a fact step wants some attention. Ages are guides, not deadlines — follow your child’s pace.

Start at the first link and work down in order. Open each skill and check its “How to tell they’ve got it” signs. The first one that wobbles is usually your missing link — work there, gently, instead of drilling the thing itself.
